Alex de Minaur achieved his 350th career tour-level victory at the Vienna Open by defeating Matteo Berrettini to set up a semi-final showdown with Alexander Zverev. The world No 10 overcame his Italian opponent 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in the quarter-final of the ATP 500 event at the Wiener Stadthalle.
Match Victory and Serving Display
De Minaur fought through a tight opening set, saving a set point at 5-6 before taking control of the tiebreak. He then saved break points at the start of the second set and broke Berrettini for the first time, racing to victory in an hour and three-quarters to reach the semi-finals of the Austrian indoor hard-court event for the third consecutive year.
The Australian produced one of his best serving performances of the season, landing 71% of his first serves and hitting five aces to Berrettini’s four. “That’s been an emphasis as of late, and I do feel like I’ve got in a good rhythm on serve and feel like I’m confident with what I’m doing,” de Minaur said.
The milestone victory makes him the ninth Australian man to reach 350 match wins, joining a list that includes Lleyton Hewitt, John Alexander, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall, Phil Dent, Tony Roche, and Pat Rafter.
Upcoming Semi-Final and ATP Finals Push
De Minaur will next face Zverev, who advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Arthur Fery 6-0 6-2 in under an hour. Zverev is set to become the world No 1 on Monday.
“That’s the types of matches that you want to be playing, against the best in the world – and right now he’s the best in the world. So I’m excited for that. Another battle,” de Minaur said regarding his upcoming match against Zverev, whom he has previously beaten in the Laver Cup but not in an individual tournament.
A victory against Zverev would move de Minaur back into the eighth and final qualifying spot for the ATP Finals, with only the Paris Masters remaining before the season-ending tournament in Turin. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev secured his place at the Finals by defeating Adrian Mannarino 6-2 6-3, earning a semi-final match against Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Tommy Paul 6-4 7-6 (7-2).
