A non-league football match was abandoned after the visiting team, trailing 8-0, was reduced to six players due to injuries. The incident occurred during a Hampshire Premier League Division One fixture on Saturday between Andover Town and Paulsgrove.
Match Abandoned After Second-Half Reductions
Andover Town held a 7-0 lead at half-time before the match was eventually called off early in the second half. According to Andover manager Robbie Skeates, speaking to the club’s website, four Paulsgrove players failed to return from the dressing room for the second half. An eighth goal was scored shortly after the restart, prompting another visiting player to leave the field injured.
Under the laws of football, a match cannot continue if a team drops below seven players. Skeates described the situation, stating that all 11 opposition players had walked off the pitch normally at the interval, leaving him to remark that four players apparently managed to get injured in the changing room. He added that the situation became a complete farce once the eighth goal went in.
League Investigation and Club Responses
As reported by BBC Sport, the Hampshire Premier Football League stated that an investigation is under way regarding the abandoned fixture, noting that no further comments will be made until the process concludes. BBC Sport requested contact details for Paulsgrove FC from the league, but the request was declined.
Meanwhile, social media posts on X from an account appearing to represent Paulsgrove attributed the departures to genuine injuries, with one reply stating that injured players cannot be forced to continue. Andover Town plans to submit a formal report to the league regarding the match.
Andover Town sits in mid-table within the 16-team division, which operates at the 12th tier of the English football pyramid. Paulsgrove occupies the bottom of the standings, having lost all 10 of their matches this season, including three completed games where they suffered defeats by margins of eight goals or more.
