Gotham FC enters the NWSL playoffs aiming for their third championship in two years, completing a rapid transformation into the league’s newest dynasty. The team’s recent Shield win marks their fifth major title in three years as they prepare for the postseason.
Shifting Roles and Expectations
Historically known as a struggling franchise, Gotham won their 2023 championship as the lowest-seeded team in the postseason. According to CBS Sports Headlines, Sunday’s quarterfinal against the Seattle Reign at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, will mark the first time Gotham plays a playoff match as the unquestionable favorite. The game will air on ABC and stream on the ESPN App with Gotham listed as -150 favorites.
A winter 2024 free-agent blitz established the foundation for this sustained success, accompanied by ongoing roster evolution. U.S. women’s national team defender Tierna Davidson serves as team captain, utilizing her progressive passing within head coach Juan Carlos Amoros’ system. Meanwhile, Jaedyn Shaw has recorded 14 goals and seven assists in 35 NWSL games since arriving in September 2025.
Tactical Growth and Roster Depth
Amoros has successfully integrated Shaw and Rose Lavelle into the attack, deploying them just behind striker Sam Kerr while balancing their creative responsibilities. Amoros praised the players’ commitment to defensive work rate alongside their technical abilities following a September victory over the Chicago Stars. Shaw noted that she models parts of her movement after Lavelle, praising her teammate’s tactical intelligence and ability to stretch defenses.
The team faces some roster challenges heading into the postseason, as rookie Jordyn Dudley will miss the playoffs due to a foot fracture sustained last month after recording four goals and three assists. However, both Shaw and Lavelle are returning to fitness after minor injuries late in the regular season.
The starting lineup will largely feature players who joined the club after the 2023 championship run, including 2024 goalkeeper of the year Ann-Katrin Berger, European champion Jess Carter, and midfielder Jaelin Howell. Left back Guro Reiten, midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, and Kerr further bolstered the squad during subsequent transfer windows.
Having officially shed the underdog label, Gotham now pursues a third league championship that would tie them with the Portland Thorns as the most successful team in NWSL history.
