Carlos Alcaraz secured his first-ever Paris Masters semifinal appearance on November 6 after saving two match points to defeat Taylor Fritz 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-3. The dramatic quarter-final victory highlighted the Spaniard’s exceptional mental resilience when facing elimination in high-pressure moments.
The Crucial Saves and Turning Point
Fritz controlled much of the early action, claiming an exhausting opening set through a 12-10 tiebreak and securing a break in the second. As Alcaraz served at 3-5 in the second set, Fritz earned his first match point, threatening another early Paris exit for the Spaniard, who retired at the same stage in 2022 against Holger Rune. Fritz earned a second opportunity while serving at 5-4, but Alcaraz answered with a stunning forehand passing shot to stay alive.
Those two saves completely shifted momentum. Alcaraz broke back to level the score at 5-5 and secured another break to take the second set 7-5. He then dominated the deciding set, wrapping up the victory in two hours and 43 minutes as reported by the official Rolex Paris Masters match report.
A History of Remarkable Escapes
This match marked the seventh time Alcaraz has won a contest after facing match points, according to Tennis Now’s breakdown of his career escapes. His most notable recent recovery occurred at the 2025 Roland-Garros final against Jannik Sinner, where he saved three championship points and recovered from two sets down to win the longest men’s final in tournament history at 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2) over five hours and 29 minutes.
Reflecting on his mentality to the ATP Tour after beating Fritz, Alcaraz explained, “I tried not to let myself down in the difficult moments in the second set. I tried to stay strong mentally and save those break points and match points. I would say 3-5 serving, that game we played incredible tennis. That point [to hold for 4-5] caused the people to stand up and bring the energy into the match. I used the people and the energy and gave them what they really wanted to watch and I am really happy to play for one and a half hours more to entertain them. The feeling I have today is unmatched.”
Impact on the ATP Finals Race
The defeat carried heavy implications for Fritz’s qualification hopes for the season-ending championship. Earlier on November 6, Ben Shelton defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, which locked in Frances Tiafoe’s first-ever qualification. With only one singles spot remaining, Fritz needed a victory over Alcaraz to claim it, but his missed opportunities allowed Rafael Jodar to secure the eighth and final spot, as confirmed by the official ATP Finals announcement.
The outcome mirrored their September encounter at the Laver Cup, where Fritz also held two match points in a deciding match tiebreak before Alcaraz rallied to win 6-3, 4-6, 13-11. Six weeks later, the American missed the exact same margin to finish the match.
Upcoming Semifinal Clash
Alcaraz advances to face Casper Ruud on November 7 after the Norwegian defeated Nuno Borges 7-6(5), 6-4 to reach his first Paris Masters semifinal. Alcaraz holds a 6-1 record in their past Tour meetings, though Ruud presents a formidable challenge on the major stage. The other semifinal pairs Shelton against Frenchman Luca Van Assche.
Alcaraz will carry strong momentum into the next round as he pursues his first Paris Masters title. The semifinal against Ruud will test whether the Spaniard can translate his latest dramatic escape into a tournament-winning run.
