Former UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev has stated his clear intention to secure a title shot at 185 pounds for his next appearance inside the Octagon.
Chimaev Eyes Strickland vs. Imavov Winner
Chimaev has remained inactive since dropping his championship belt via a split decision against Sean Strickland at UFC 328 in May. Despite that setback, the fighter remains determined to reclaim his title and is targeting the winner of the rumored middleweight championship matchup between Strickland and Nassourdine Imavov.
In an interview with MMAjunkie.com, as reported by HEAVY, Chimaev stated that he will not settle for any opponent other than the victor of Strickland versus Imavov.
“It should be the winner because I’m the No. 1 contender, and I didn’t lose that match. People say I lost the match, but I’m the real champion,” Chimaev said.
During the conversation, Chimaev also criticized Strickland, who is currently delaying his return as he seeks a new contract due to dissatisfaction with his compensation from the organization.
“He’s always crying about something, so I’m just being ready. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Maybe the UFC wants me to face the winner of the fight, so I just want to take my belt back very soon. If it happens soon, I’m going to fight soon, as well,” Chimaev said.
Ready for the Octagon Return
The extended layoff since his May defeat has proven frustrating for Chimaev, who has sought a return to competition for an extended period. While waiting, he has participated in wrestling matches in RAF, but his primary focus remains returning to the UFC and regaining his championship.
“Hopefully very soon, but it’s not about me right now. Whenever the UFC calls me and they ask are you ready to fight, I’ll fight anyone,” Chimaev said.
