Former Northants Steelbacks batter Chris Lynn tested positive for drugs following his appearance at this season’s T20 Blast Finals Day, according to an announcement by the Cricket Regulator.
Suspension and Test Details
Laboratory results from Lynn’s urine sample detected benzoylecgonine, which is a metabolite of cocaine. The governing body handed him a one-month suspension that has already been completed.
During the Finals Day event at Edgbaston on July 18, the 36-year-old scored 39 runs as a top-scorer in the semi-final victory against Somerset and contributed four runs in the final as his team defeated Hampshire.
Admission and Expert View
Lynn acknowledged that he used cocaine during the evening of July 15 and the early hours of July 16, which fell within the week prior to Finals Day. He maintained that the intake constituted an out-of-competition violation that had no connection to his athletic performance, and an expert appointed by the regulator agreed with this perspective.
The former Australia international completed his ban from July 31 to August 30, 2026. His penalty was reduced from a possible three months down to one month after he finished a substance of abuse treatment programme.
County Context and Regulation
Lynn represented Northants again this season, having previously accumulated 880 T20 runs during two stints with the county across 2022 and 2023, while he also played for the Hampshire squad that lost to Somerset in the 2025 Blast final.
The regulator stated that Northamptonshire will face no disciplinary action regarding the positive test, and the club has been contacted for a statement.
The Cricket Regulator operates as an independent organization formed in December 2023 to oversee adherence to the sport’s rules.
