Sunderland experienced their first loss of the Europa League campaign, falling 2-0 to Dinamo Zagreb at the Stadium of Light. First-half goals from Luka Stojkovic and Dion Beljo secured the victory for the Croatian side, ending the Black Cats’ unbeaten run in the competition.
First-Half Dominance
The visitors took control early, breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute. After Sunderland failed to clear a corner kick, a header from Granit Xhaka landed at the feet of Stojkovic on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder controlled the ball with his chest before striking a volley into the net.
Dinamo Zagreb nearly extended their lead shortly after, but a vital goal-line clearance from Thomas Meunier prevented a second goal. However, the hosts’ defensive struggles continued in the 39th minute. Following another failed clearance, Stojkovic provided a pass to Beljo, who timed his run perfectly to finish the move and put the visitors ahead by two goals at halftime.
Second-Half Response
Sunderland showed improvement after the interval, increasing their attacking pressure as they attempted to recover. Wilson Isidor appeared to have provided a lifeline for the home side, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Despite the increased intensity, the Black Cats were unable to break down a disciplined Dinamo Zagreb defense.
Sunderland will look to regroup before their upcoming Premier League fixture against Chelsea on November 8, while Dinamo Zagreb prepares for their next European match against Bayer Leverkusen on November 26.
