The Minnesota Vikings are making a significant change at quarterback for their upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that veteran backup Carson Wentz will take the starting snaps on Monday Night Football in Week 9 while Kyler Murray recovers from a hamstring strain.
Injury and Replacement Details
O’Connell stated that Murray is considered week-to-week, noting the team chose to sideline him to avoid turning the issue into a more significant injury. With Wentz stepping into the starting role for Week 9, Max Brosmer will serve as the primary backup behind him.
Expressing faith in the veteran signal-caller, O’Connell highlighted that Wentz has already played a major role in two victories earlier in the season against strong opponents. Describing him as a steadying presence, the coach emphasized the team’s full confidence in his ability to execute the offense.
Past Performances and Scheme Fit
Wentz previously filled in for Murray earlier in the year after Murray sustained a concussion in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Coming off the bench in Week 1, Wentz completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-22 win. He followed that up with a start in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears, completing 11 of 20 throws for 143 yards in a 9-3 rain-soaked victory.
Murray’s fit in O’Connell’s offensive system has been questioned this season, as his -0.11 expected points added per dropback ranks fifth-worst in the NFL. The scheme previously thrived under quarterbacks who attacked deep and over the middle of the field, an area where Murray has historically struggled compared to his preference for shorter passes.
This offensive misalignment has contributed to the Vikings scoring just 12 touchdowns through their first seven games—the lowest total for a 6-1 or better team since 1982. Going into Week 9, Wentz will face a favorable matchup against a Buffalo Bills defense that has allowed the third-most passing yards per game in the NFL this season.
