Scott Parker’s tenure as West Ham head coach began with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Cardiff City, as his side recovered from a three-goal deficit. Elsewhere in the Championship, league leaders Middlesbrough saw their 11-match unbeaten streak end with a 2-0 loss at Wrexham.
Parker’s Resilient Start at West Ham
Appointed on a two-and-a-half-year contract to replace the sacked Nuno Espírito Santo, Parker took charge of the team just hours after his confirmation. Despite the short notice, he opted to manage from the touchline rather than watching from the stands. The match initially appeared disastrous for the visitors, as Cardiff’s Jack Moylan netted a first-half hat-trick. Moylan opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a long-range strike, added a penalty in the 37th minute, and completed his treble two minutes later after a header from Will Fish.
Parker admitted the first half was poor, noting that the team was passive and slow. “I just helped them tactically and told them: ‘OK, this is the way it needs to be now.’ Certainly out of possession, we needed to be more aggressive,” he said. The tactical adjustments and substitutions paid off after the break. Divine Mukasa scored in the 58th minute, followed by an Arne Engels goal that narrowed the gap to 3-2. Max Kilman eventually leveled the score in the 82nd minute, converting a cross from Jarrod Bowen.
Middlesbrough Beaten at Wrexham
Middlesbrough’s lead at the top of the table was challenged at the Racecourse, where Wrexham secured a 2-0 victory. George Thomason broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a strike from outside the area, and Oli Rathbone doubled the lead in the 84th minute. Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg acknowledged that the late absence of top scorer Will Lankshear was a setback, though he noted that his team lacked sharpness throughout the match.
Late Drama at Ashton Gate
In other Championship action, Bristol City fell to a 2-1 defeat against Wolves. Scott Twine gave the hosts the lead with a curling free-kick, but substitute Sean Neave secured the win for the visitors with two late goals in the 82nd and 89th minutes. Wolves manager César Peixoto praised his team’s character, while Bristol City manager Michael Skubala expressed frustration at his side’s inability to defend their lead in the final stages.
