Miami secured the top spot in the first College Football Playoff Rankings of the 2026 season as one of just three undefeated teams left in the sport. The Hurricanes lead No. 2 Georgia and undefeated No. 3 Utah at the top of the list, alongside No. 4 Indiana from the Big Ten to complete the four first-round byes.
SEC Contenders and Bracket Bubble
The SEC received a significant boost in contenders compared to the AP Top 25. Alabama climbed four spots higher than its AP ranking to sit at No. 5 in the initial CFP Rankings, while Kentucky took No. 6 and Texas placed at No. 7. The lower end of the bracket features Notre Dame as the final team in at the 11-seed, while traditional powerhouse Ohio State sits at No. 12 as the first team out, edged out by the top Group of Six champion Boise State at No. 25.
The schools projected to host a first-round game in this scenario include No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 Kentucky, No. 7 Texas, and No. 8 UCLA. Notre Dame enters a precarious position after previously finishing just outside the playoff last year with a 10-2 record. Having already lost to BYU, the Fighting Irish face No. 1 Miami on Saturday with their postseason hopes heavily on the line, especially after wins by potential resume boosters SMU and Wisconsin evaporated last weekend.
Conference Impact and Expansion Scenarios
The selection committee demonstrated a strong preference for the SEC, placing four conference teams inside the top seven. Alabama benefited the most by jumping to No. 5 despite holding two losses, while Kentucky and Texas also saw notable upward movement. In total, five SEC programs occupy projected CFP spots, with No. 13 Tennessee and No. 14 LSU keeping additional conference teams on the bubble.
While the College Football Playoff will maintain a 12-team format for at least one more season, alternative projections for a 24-team expansion illustrate that the SEC could secure nine bids, accounting for more than half of the conference.
