Seattle Mariners Hire Jason Kanzler as New Manager

The Seattle Mariners have named Jason Kanzler as their new manager, the franchise announced on Tuesday. Kanzler, who previously served as the director of player development for the Chicago Cubs, fills the vacancy created when Seattle dismissed former skipper Dan Wilson after a disappointing 2026 campaign.

At 36 years old, Kanzler takes on his first managerial position at any level of baseball. His appointment makes him the second-youngest manager currently working in Major League Baseball, behind 34-year-old Washington Nationals manager Blake Butera.

Coaching Background and Organizational Vision

“Our goal in this process was finding a manager with the ability to challenge all of us to improve,” president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. “Jason has the mindset, expertise, communication skills, and intensity to help create a championship standard here in Seattle.”

While Kanzler has not previously managed a team, he possesses prior experience on a major-league coaching staff. He spent the 2022 season as a major-league coach with the Houston Astros before serving as their assistant hitting coach in 2023, following earlier roles within Houston’s player development system. The Cubs then hired him to direct their player development program in 2024. Former Astros manager Joe Espada was reportedly the other finalist for the Mariners’ managerial position.

“I am thrilled to join the Mariners organization and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running,” Kanzler said in a statement. “This team has an immense amount of talent in all facets of the game, and my coaching staff and I are excited to access and unlock this team’s full potential.”

Hiring a manager without any prior experience leading a club is relatively uncommon in Major League Baseball, though modern examples exist. The New York Yankees notably hired Aaron Boone directly from a broadcasting career in 2018, and Boone went on to guide New York to eight playoff appearances over his first nine seasons.

Kanzler represents the third managerial appointment under Dipoto since he assumed leadership of Seattle’s baseball operations in September 2015. He succeeds Scott Servais, who managed the team from 2015 to 2024, and Wilson, who led the dugout from 2024 to 2026.

Seattle enters the upcoming offseason searching for answers after posting a 76-86 record in 2026, finishing five games out of the lead in the American League West. The drop in performance came just one season after the Mariners reached Game 7 of the ALCS and came within five outs of reaching their first World Series, before widespread hitting struggles hindered the club throughout 2026.
