Islanders Sign Defenseman Ben Hutton to Professional Tryout

The New York Islanders have signed veteran defenseman Ben Hutton to a professional tryout contract, the team announced on Monday. The 33-year-old blueliner will compete for a roster spot during training camp as he aims to extend his decade-long career in the NHL.

A Journeyed NHL Career

Hutton first entered the league with the Vancouver Canucks in 2015 and has since appeared in 575 total regular-season games. Over his career, which includes stints with Vancouver, the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights, he has recorded 30 goals and 109 assists. Internationally, Hutton earned a gold medal representing Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Championship.

During the 2019-20 campaign, Hutton played 65 games for Los Angeles, contributing four goals and 12 assists. Although the Kings missed the postseason that year, he served as a regular presence on the blue line, compiling 16 total points.

Stanley Cup Success and Recent Performance

Following brief stops in Anaheim and Toronto, Hutton joined the Golden Knights in 2021, beginning a five-season tenure that marked his longest stay with any single franchise. He was part of the Vegas squad that captured the Stanley Cup in 2023.

Last season, Hutton posted a career-best six goals along with nine assists for 15 points in 55 regular-season appearances. He also suited up in seven postseason contests, adding one assist as Vegas advanced to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

While a professional tryout does not guarantee a standard contract, the agreement gives Hutton an opportunity to impress the Islanders’ organization and earn a permanent spot on the roster ahead of the upcoming season.
