Ireland cricketer Rebecca Stokell announced she accepts full responsibility for unintentionally violating reporting protocols concerning prescription medication use. She has already commenced a voluntary suspension.
ICC Investigation and Medication Error
The International Cricket Council verified that the 26-year-old athlete underwent drug testing following her team’s loss against Sri Lanka during the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in June, which yielded an adverse finding for a specified substance. Despite the substance having no performance-enhancing qualities, Stokell admitted failing to follow reporting procedures for prescription medication. She initiated a voluntary suspension period while awaiting the conclusion of the ICC inquiry.
In a public statement, Stokell acknowledged her error, noting she entered the suspension proactively before the final findings are delivered. She emphasized that although the issue had no connection to performance, she recognizes her obligation to follow anti-doping regulations and aims to return to international play for Ireland promptly.
Cricket Ireland Response and Player Career
Cricket Ireland high performance director Graeme West stated that the organization feels sympathy for Stokell and has offered suitable support. He emphasized that the situation acts as a reminder that anti-doping rules safeguard both athletes and the game itself. West added that every player must meet expected standards and responsibilities, and Cricket Ireland will maintain regular education initiatives regarding these critical rules.
Stokell first played internationally in 2017 and has represented Ireland in 109 matches across all formats.
