Tottenham midfielder Drew Spence expressed immense pride after setting the all-time appearance record in the Women’s Super League by playing in her 217th match. The 34-year-old reached the milestone by starting against Birmingham City, surpassing the previous record held by former Chelsea captain Millie Bright.
A Milestone Built on Longevity and Sacrifice
Spence told BBC Sport that achieving the record is a very proud moment not only for her but also for her family. She noted that the milestone reflects years of hard work, physical sacrifices, and maintaining motivation across multiple seasons.
Spending her entire career in London, Spence previously played 14 years at Chelsea, winning five league titles and four FA Cup trophies. She came through the academies at Arsenal and Fulham before switching her international allegiance from England to Jamaica in 2021.
Former teammate Erin Cuthbert praised Spence as an absolute warrior on the pitch and a great teammate who has earned every accolade through her remarkable longevity.
Physical Peak and Leadership at Tottenham
Appointed Tottenham captain in the summer, Spence has become a central figure under manager Martin Ho. She has played every minute for the club so far this season and feels she is currently in the best physical shape of her career.
Spence stated that improved understanding of her body, nutrition, and recovery methods have helped her excel. Although she admits to some personal regrets about not understanding physical preparation earlier in her career, she views those challenges as valuable learning experiences that shaped her success.
Tottenham manager Martin Ho commended Spence for her adaptability and professionalism, noting that she has earned massive respect at the club and can continue playing for as long as she desires.
Spence confirmed she has no immediate plans to retire and intends to keep improving and playing football for as long as possible.
