Brighton bounced back from a Carabao Cup defeat to secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered a standout performance, making seven saves to help the Seagulls claim their fifth clean sheet in six Premier League matches.
Verbruggen and Defense Stand Firm Against City
Verbruggen’s decisive moment arrived in the second half when he produced a sprawling save to deny Matheus Nunes and prevent an equalizer. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler praised the goalkeeper for spreading belief throughout the team as Brighton became the first visiting side to keep a Premier League clean sheet at the Etihad since August 2025.
Despite Manchester City recording an expected goals figure of 1.92 and firing 21 shots without scoring—their highest tally without a goal in the competition since November 2024—they failed to find the back of the net. Home head coach Enzo Maresca saw his side rue missed opportunities from Iliman Ndiaye, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Nunes.
Brighton’s defensive solidity has been bolstered by 19-year-old summer signing Luka Vuskovic, who started alongside Lewis Dunk in central defence. Verbruggen emphasized that the clean sheet was a joint effort, noting that several shots were blocked by teammates during the 90 minutes.
Title Talk Kept in Check
The victory elevates Brighton to third place in the Premier League table, trailing just two points behind Arsenal and Manchester City. The Seagulls have now recorded wins against both Manchester City and a 3-0 victory over Arsenal earlier in September, boasting the division’s highest goal tally with 24 goals in nine matches alongside six clean sheets.
When asked by Sky Sports about a potential title challenge, Verbruggen dismissed early speculation. He stated that the squad is only nine matches into the campaign and prefers to take each fixture individually while focusing on daily development.
Brighton will look to maintain their form as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures in the Premier League season.
