The 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic serves as the crown jewel of the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championship, scheduled to run at approximately 6:16 p.m. ET on Saturday. Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., hosts the prestigious race for the fourth time. The main storyline features a high-stakes clash between veteran contenders Sovereignty and Forever Young against 3-year-old reigning Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes double winner Golden Tempo.
Odds and Expert Background
The latest odds list Forever Young as the 2-1 favorite, closely followed by Sovereignty at 5-2, while Golden Tempo enters at 5-1. According to CBS Sports Headlines, racing expert Michelle Yu, who is on site in Lexington, provides her predictions and picks for the event.
Yu’s handicapping track record includes correctly backing Citizen Bull to win the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and predicting victories for Forever Young in the Saudi Cup, Journalism in the San Felipe Stakes, Sandman in the Arkansas Derby, and Mindframe in the Churchill Downs Stakes. She also hit the exacta in the Kentucky Derby.
Her past successes extend to hitting the Fierceness-Journalism exacta in the Pacific Classic and nailing the Renegade-Silent Tactic-Taptastic trifecta in the Arkansas Derby in March. During the Kentucky Derby undercard, she successfully predicted Crude Velocity’s win in the Pat Day Mile and Stark Contrast’s victory in the American Turf.
Surprising Predictions and Contenders
A notable surprise in Yu’s analysis is that she is not high on Golden Tempo as a win contender at 5-1 odds. Golden Tempo navigated the Triple Crown season by winning the Kentucky Derby before trainer Cherie DeVaux chose to skip the Preakness Stakes, allowing the horse to return fresh for a victory in the Belmont Stakes.
However, his prep season performance included third-place finishes at the Louisiana Derby and the Risen Star Stakes, alongside a missed win at the Travers Stakes in August. While Yu includes the horse in her exotics, she leaves him out of her top four choices to win.
As Yu explained to SportsLine, “The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner ran well in the Travers Stakes, but couldn’t get it done. Since Keeneland generally plays pretty forward-friendly, I’m concerned about his come-from-the-clouds style. He has looked very strong in his gallops this week, but he’s facing some serious elders.”
For the victory, Yu’s top pick is a horse that has appeared in excellent spirits throughout the week at Keeneland, alongside a longshot noted for having high cruising speed.
