Alexander Zverev produced a dominant performance to defeat Britain’s Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 at the Vienna Open, securing a place in the semi-finals. The top-seeded German needed just 59 minutes to overcome Fery in a repeat of their Wimbledon clash earlier this season.
Zverev Advances to 12th Semi-Final of the Season
Zverev, who struck 19 winners during the match, is set to replace Jannik Sinner as the world No. 1. The 29-year-old will become only the second German man to hold the top ranking after Boris Becker accomplished the milestone in 1991. Zverev stated during his on-court interview that he struggled to sleep on Thursday night after clinching the top spot by defeating Tallon Griekspoor in the previous round.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Zverev praised Fery’s tactical approach and movement, emphasizing that the world No. 35 should remain proud of his achievements in his first full season on tour. Zverev will next contest his 12th semi-final of the year against fifth seed Alex de Minaur, who advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Matteo Berrettini.
Medvedev Secures ATP Finals Qualification
In another quarter-final contest, Daniil Medvedev defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 to book his place in the last four. The victory sealed Medvedev’s qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals for the seventh time, joining Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Ben Shelton in the eight-man field. Sinner has also qualified for the tournament but will not participate due to injury, leaving four remaining spots available.
The win marks a strong campaign for Medvedev, who has now surpassed 50 match wins in a season for the first time since 2023 while collecting four titles. He will face Alcaraz in the semi-finals after the Spaniard defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
