The Milwaukee Brewers captured their first World Series title in franchise history, led by All-Star catcher William Contreras who earned the World Series MVP award. Contreras recorded eight hits in 21 at-bats for a .381 batting average, drove in four runs, and struck out only once during the five-game series. In addition to his offensive production, he excelled behind the plate by going 10 for 14 in ABS challenges and throwing out four basestealers.
A Historic Performance at the Plate and Behind It
Following Game 5, Contreras expressed his emotions through an interpreter, stating he lacked words to describe his feelings and expressed gratitude toward his teammates and manager Pat Murphy. Contreras made history by becoming the 27th player to record multiple hits in each of the first three games of a World Series, which featured a three-hit performance in Game 3 and two hits alongside two caught stealings in Game 1.
Ace reliever Aaron Ashby praised the catcher after the final game, calling him the team’s bulldog and emphasizing that the club would not be the same without him. Contreras faced strong competition for the MVP honor from teammates including Ashby, who tossed 5 ⅔ scoreless innings, Jackson Chourio, who batted .458 with 11 hits in 24 at-bats, and rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt, who hit .421 with eight hits.
Building a Championship Franchise
The Brewers originally landed Contreras in December 2022 through a three-team trade involving the Atlanta Braves and the Oakland Athletics. Since joining Milwaukee, Contreras has developed into one of the top catchers in the sport, making two All-Star appearances before securing the championship MVP trophy.
With this achievement, Contreras joins Salvador Perez of the 2015 Kansas City Royals as the most recent catchers to claim World Series MVP honors.
