Formula 1 moves swiftly from Austin to Mexico City as Kimi Antonelli closes in on the championship title. The upcoming weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez brings several major storylines, including championship permutations, team battles, and unique high-altitude challenges.
Antonelli Nears the World Championship
Kimi Antonelli has another opportunity to secure the World Championship and become the youngest titleholder just seven days after narrowly missing out in Austin. A victory in the United States Grand Prix set up the chance, though strong finishes by Lewis Hamilton in fourth and George Russell in eighth forced the celebrations to be postponed.
Antonelli now only requires a top-nine finish in Sunday’s race to clinch the crown. Even a tenth-place finish will suffice if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the event, though a victory by Russell would prevent the title party in that scenario.
Red Bull Catches McLaren in the Teams’ Standings
Max Verstappen extended his podium streak to six consecutive top-three finishes in Austin, maintaining a remarkably consistent season where he has only missed the podium once when finishing a race. This recent upturn in results has allowed Red Bull to draw level with McLaren in the Teams’ standings.
Both constructors share 355 points, with Red Bull holding the upper hand due to a higher count of second-place finishes. While form points toward Red Bull, McLaren displayed strong pace in Austin and aims to unlock more speed in Mexico City.
Sergio Perez Reaches 300 F1 Starts
Home favorite Sergio Perez prepares for his milestone 300th Formula 1 start in front of massive local support at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The festivities begin with a Wednesday show run in Mexico City before Perez hits the track on Friday to aid Cadillac’s development as the newest team on the grid.
The long-term project has reinvigorated Perez following a year away from racing, with team supporters recognizing that reaching Q2 would represent a major achievement. Perez recently signed a contract extension to remain with Cadillac until at least 2029.
Rookie FP1 Outings and Young Driver Runouts
Mexico City continues its tradition as a venue for multiple rookie practice appearances, following standout sessions like Ollie Bearman’s run with Haas in 2023. Two new rookies will make their FP1 debuts, as Racing Bulls fields F2 race winner Nikola Tsolov and F3 runner-up Freddie Slater drives for Audi.
Additional young drivers gaining valuable track time include Fred Vesti for Mercedes, Leonardo Fornaroli for McLaren, Jak Crawford for Aston Martin, Luke Browning for Williams, and Colton Herta for Cadillac. Tsolov arrives amidst a tight F2 championship battle with Rafael Camara, while Slater recently finished behind Ugo Ugochukwu in F3.
A Unique Test at High Altitude
Following a record-breaking 467,000 weekend attendance in Austin, the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez prepares to host another energetic crowd. The venue delivers a distinctive atmosphere highlighted by the Foro Sol section, where the track winds through a former baseball stadium.
Beyond the fan noise, teams face severe technical demands due to the track’s location 2,200 meters above sea level, making it the highest elevation on the calendar. The thin air creates unique aerodynamic and cooling hurdles, requiring Monaco-level downforce configurations that react similarly to low-downforce Monza packages.
