England are facing concerns over the fitness of fly-half Fin Smith ahead of their Nations Championship home opener against Australia on 8 November. The Northampton player sustained a calf injury during the second half of a match against Leicester and will miss the national squad’s three-day training camp in Bagshot this week.
Fly-half Options and Squad Cover
The potential absence of Smith would present a significant challenge for head coach Steve Borthwick, as the 24-year-old started at fly-half in all three of England’s Tests in July and played a crucial role in his club’s domestic title win last season. While England management expressed hope that he could recover in time to face the Wallabies, the limited preparation window threatens to disrupt team planning.
In response to the injury, Borthwick called up Gloucester player Charlie Atkinson as cover, alongside existing specialist fly-halves Marcus Smith and George Ford in the squad. Fin Smith has solidified his position as the first-choice number 10 after replacing Ford following a defeat against Ireland in the Six Nations, whereas Marcus Smith’s last start in that position for England occurred in Dublin during the opening round of the 2025 Six Nations.
Additional Fitness Doubts and Squad Returns
An official update regarding Smith’s physical condition is scheduled for Tuesday amid fitness concerns surrounding multiple other team members. Bath player Guy Pepper exited the field limping in pain against Gloucester, and Benhard Janse van Rensburg has been sidelined since sustaining a heavy concussion during Bristol’s second Premiership fixture of the season.
Gloucester’s inside centre Seb Atkinson is also unable to participate in training this week though he remains a possibility for his club’s weekend fixture against Northampton. These issues leave Borthwick and the team’s remaining specialist centres—Henry Slade, Joe Marchant, Max Ojomoh, and Fraser Dingwall—awaiting further clarity ahead of the formal squad announcement next Monday.
Joe Marchant expressed enthusiasm about returning to international contention for the first time since the 2023 World Cup, having previously relocated to France to play for Stade Français before joining Sale Sharks to regain eligibility. “When I was a kid I wanted to play for England and that’s not changed,” he said.
