Rapper and entertainment executive Jay-Z has been selected as the headline performer for the Super Bowl LXI halftime show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Apple Music made the official announcement during the halftime break of the Monday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
A Journey to the Biggest Stage
Jay-Z’s entertainment agency, Roc Nation, maintains a partnership with the NFL that includes advising on the selection of halftime acts. Reflecting on his upcoming appearance, Jay-Z stated in a release that the milestone represents a remarkable journey from his debut album to the world’s most prominent stage, noting that his three decades of music, labor, and culture continue to feel like a dream come true.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the announcement, highlighting the league’s ongoing collaboration with Roc Nation and the artist. Goodell stated that he had requested Jay-Z perform himself when the partnership was initially formed, whenever the timing felt appropriate for the artist. Goodell added that he looks forward to global audiences experiencing the creativity and cultural influence Jay-Z will bring to the performance.
Recent Performances and Partnership History
The partnership between the NFL and Roc Nation, established in August 2019, has previously produced halftime performances featuring artists such as Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, and Usher.
As reported by Laura Zornosa and Maane Khatchatourian of the Los Angeles Times, the Super Bowl performance follows a series of celebratory events marking the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s debut album, “Reasonable Doubt.” The 25-time Grammy winner recently played consecutive concerts at SoFi Stadium as part of his “Jay-Z 30” tour, following three sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium in July.
Jay-Z will bring his decades-long career to the Super Bowl stage when the event takes place in Inglewood.
