Verstappen Frustrated by Familiar Issues at US Grand Prix

Max Verstappen claimed his 10th podium of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, marking his sixth consecutive top-three finish. Despite the milestone statistic, the result left the reigning champion deeply dissatisfied following a weekend plagued by performance drops, strategic missteps, and technical inconsistencies.

Missed Potential and Tyre Struggles

Although Saturday practice and a strong Q2 lap hinted at pole position pace, Verstappen unexpectedly lost grip during Q3. Entering Sunday, his race pace still looked strong enough to contend for the victory, but a cascade of small errors derailed his afternoon.

Verstappen noted that softer tyre compounds failed to function properly during the race, compounded by an incorrect stint order and a failure to react when cars on harder compounds found significantly more grip. While Red Bull’s RB22 had excelled at managing softer tyres in recent weekends, the team admitted that the approach backfired completely in Austin.

In addition to strategic miscalculations, Verstappen voiced frustration over inconsistent power unit behavior through the corners, which prevented him from establishing any driving rhythm. Combined with a slow pit stop, these cumulative setbacks prevented Red Bull from unlocking the car’s true potential.

Lingering Problems in Starts and Radio Comms

Beyond the race-specific hurdles, Verstappen highlighted ongoing weaknesses that have plagued Red Bull throughout the year, specifically concerning race starts and radio communication. Addressing his getaway, Verstappen described his start as neither lost nor gained, characterizing it as simply matching Red Bull’s subpar season average.

Radio reliability also faltered again, adding to previous communication failures seen earlier in the season. At the bumpy Austin circuit, Verstappen was unable to hear Tom Hart, who filled in as his race engineer to build a working relationship for the future. Having also experienced audio failures in Singapore, Verstappen joked that the team might need to resort to sign language.

While team members conceded that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli held the advantage in pure pace over the weekend, Verstappen’s primary frustration centered on Red Bull’s failure to reach its own performance targets.
