The England cricket team has suffered consecutive defeats from dominant positions within four days during the tri-series in Pakistan. While the team is not in disarray, these back-to-back collapses against Sri Lanka and Pakistan have exposed several cracks that require attention.
Missing Senior Players and Batting Shortcomings
Harry Brook’s side has been missing key personnel during the tournament. Jos Buttler is injured, Jacob Bethell is recovering from an injury, Jofra Archer was rested, Adil Rashid has not been picked for the last two matches, and Josh Tongue missed Sunday’s loss. The presence of Rashid and Archer would have bolstered the bowling attack, while Bethell and Buttler could have provided vital guidance on the field.
The absences of Bethell and Buttler were also felt with the bat, as Sunday’s game was lost due to an under-par score of 241 all out. The pitch at Lahore allowed Pakistan’s number eight Shadab Khan to score an unbeaten 113 and England’s number ten Gus Atkinson to hit an unbeaten 36, showing the surface was manageable. Although Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson excelled with middle-overs wickets, England failed to close out the match when Pakistan were nine down.
The Curran Conundrum and Rashid’s Absence
Sam Curran has experienced a difficult time in Pakistan following his return from a groin injury. His variations have proven predictable, and he recently conceded 2-103 from nine overs against Sri Lanka after going for 0-32 in eight overs against Pakistan. Stuart Broad believes Curran performs best with a defined and prominent role, and England must determine that role, especially with Jamie Overton excelling and the 2027 World Cup in Africa approaching.
England also need to address the absence of 38-year-old leg-spinner Adil Rashid, whose recent omission may be linked to recovering fitness after a hand injury or a dip in form. Sky Sports’ Nasser Hussain noted last week that Rashid’s performances had dropped off, and his replacement by Liam Dawson for tactical reasons has raised unexpected questions.
England’s next tri-series match is against Sri Lanka in Lahore on Thursday.
