Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has dismissed speculation about a January exit for Estêvão Willian, confirming the young winger remains in his plans despite limited playing time this season. The 19-year-old Brazilian has started only two of 11 matches across all competitions, prompting questions about his future at Stamford Bridge following his arrival from Palmeiras last year.
Manager Insists on Adaptation and Patience
The discussion regarding Estêvão intensified after he remained an unused substitute during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup penalty defeat to Liverpool. Addressing reporters ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester United, Alonso stated there have been no talks about a loan move and accepted responsibility for his team selections.
“No discussions about that,” Alonso said. “It’s no secret that all players want to be on the pitch. When any of them haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility for that. But everyone has to be ready because in any game they could be important. Este, his training and his attitude has been good.”
Estêvão arrived with high expectations following a £51.4 million transfer and scored a notable goal against Barcelona last season. However, a hamstring injury derailed his momentum and his hopes of reaching the World Cup. He has accumulated only 47 minutes of Premier League action this campaign, though he received an international recall from Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday.
Tactical Demands and Future Role
Alonso explained that the teenager is still navigating the physical and tactical demands of English football. “Well [it is] in the adaptation to the competition, the process to learn things with the ball, against the ball, how to be more competitive,” Alonso said, adding that the high tempo of the Premier League makes breaking through difficult for teenagers.
Alonso noted that development involves improving both in possession and defensive work rate. “With the ball is very important as well. That’s sometimes when to take the right decision, what to do in the next situation. It’s to keep the ball, it’s to find the right pass. And, as well, against the ball you need to be competitive. That’s in football and in the Premier League mandatory now,” he said.
While Alonso has predominantly deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation utilizing Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers as central attacking midfielders, he suggested Estêvão could occasionally feature in that pocket position alongside his primary role on the wing.
Ahead of the match against Manchester United, Chelsea also face defensive concerns as Jorrel Hato deals with a back issue, while Maxence Lacroix is sidelined until after the international break due to a hamstring injury sustained against Liverpool.
