Professional golfer John Catlin has spoken out about the growing uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf’s future as he competes at the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final in Mallorca. Despite spending the past two years trying to secure a permanent spot on the breakaway circuit, Catlin remains unsure about what lies ahead for the league.
Uncertainty Surrounding LIV Golf
Speaking after his opening round at Club de Golf Alcanada on October 29, Catlin told sports.yahoo.com that he could not predict whether LIV would offer him a full-time position for its proposed 2027 campaign. When asked if he was receiving the same information as other players, he described the current atmosphere as a holding pattern.
Catlin stated to sports.yahoo.com, “You know, I don’t know what they are all giving out to the players, so I don’t really know if I am or I’m not. There’s been some information shared, but I don’t know if that’s what everybody is getting or that’s what I’m getting. It just seems like they are in a bit of a holding pattern. I’m just focusing on what I can do and the opportunities that are in front of me.”
When asked if recent player departures could create an opportunity for a permanent contract, Catlin replied that nobody knows, acknowledging that several developments remain outside his control.
Adrian Meronk also highlighted the general lack of clarity, stating to sports.yahoo.com that numerous unknowns complicate decision-making while the league’s future remains unclear. LIV Golf faces internal doubts, restructuring through bankruptcy, and the need to retain enough golfers for a viable tournament next year to secure a reported $300 million investment from BC Partners.
Focus on the DP World Tour and Recent Success
While LIV’s future remains uncertain, Catlin has shifted his immediate priorities toward regaining his DP World Tour card. The 35-year-old opened the tournament in Mallorca with a six-under-par 66, leaving him just one stroke behind the leader.
Catlin explained to sports.yahoo.com why he is aiming to return to the tour, saying, “I’m just trying to take it week by week and do the best I can. I know what the DP World Tour is, I know what it’s about and it is something I can definitely get behind. I think it’s a great tour and it gives players a great pathway to the PGA Tour and that’s definitely been a goal of mine since I was a little kid. I’m pretty clear on that. That’s why I’m here. That’s why I’m trying to play as well as I can and earn that card back.”
Catlin previously won three DP World Tour titles, including the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama and the Irish Open at Galgorm Castle in 2020, followed by the Austrian Open in 2021.
His association with LIV Golf developed through reserve appearances, such as replacing Charles Howell III at LIV Golf UK 2024. He led the Asian Tour’s International Series rankings for much of 2024 before Joaquin Niemann took the top spot, and subsequent attempts to secure a permanent spot through the December 2024 promotions event and team discussions were unsuccessful, leading him to continue as a reserve for 2025 alongside other golfers returning to traditional tours.
Just four days prior to his remarks in Mallorca, Catlin claimed a five-shot victory at the Link Hong Kong Open, securing his first appearance at the Masters and a place in the 2027 Open Championship.
The next phase of LIV Golf will depend on securing investment, establishing a new ownership model, and creating a competitive structure that gives players confidence in their professional futures.
