Duncan Ferguson began his managerial career at Glentoran with a battling 1-1 draw against Irish Premiership leaders Coleraine. After a defensive first-half display, the visitors secured a point on the road thanks to a late header from Jordan Stewart.
A Solid Start After a Week of Headlines
The appointment of the former Everton striker stands as the most high-profile in the Irish League in recent years. Following disappointing spells with Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Ferguson arrived at a club looking to return to past heights.
As reported by BBC Sport, his first scheduled match against Ballymena United was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The build-up to his actual debut was preceded by a viral video of him searching for a WiFi password at the Oval.
Reflecting on the match, Ferguson stated, as quoted by BBC Sport: “It’s a relief. At the end of the day you are under pressure. My first game didn’t happen with Ballymena, and all of a sudden my next game is away at the league leaders. It’s not easy. The boys performed great and they done their club proud.”
Tactical Approach and Late Equaliser
Facing a Coleraine side that boasts the division’s highest scoring record, Ferguson opted for a solid tactical foundation. Joel Cooper broke Glentoran’s resistance in the first half with a curled shot, while Matthew Shevlin hit the post and goalkeeper Andrew Mills made key saves.
The visitors improved after the restart and pushed forward. Stewart equalized in the 88th minute with a header, rewarding a performance built on grit and determination.
Discussing the match, Ferguson told BBC Sport: “They have a lot of attacking threats but, aside from the boy sticking one in the top corner, we restricted them in the first half. We’ve come to the best team in the league and in the second half I felt we went toe-to-toe with them.” He added: “If you had offered me a draw before the match I would have taken it, 100%.”
Ferguson continues to build his knowledge of the Northern Irish top flight by attending matches and consulting club staff. He will now prepare his squad for an away fixture against Carrick Rangers.
