Stephen Robinson has vowed to keep fighting as Aberdeen manager after his team suffered an unacceptable 4-0 defeat at home to Hibernian, leaving his future at Pittodrie hanging by a thread. The manager had labeled the visit of Marink Reedijk’s side, who were bottom of the table before kickoff, as a must-win match, but his team delivered a miserable performance that prompted home fans to stream for the exits early.
Mounting Pressure and Relegation Fears
By the end of the four-goal loss, supporters chanted for the manager’s dismissal and vented their frustration directly at Robinson as he headed for the tunnel. Aberdeen legend Willie Miller told BBC Sportsound that Robinson looked beleaguered and like a man lost. Television cameras then focused on chief executive Adrian Bevington, who was appointed in September and now faces a major decision only a month and a half into his tenure. Following a fourth Scottish Premiership defeat in five matches, Aberdeen now sit in the relegation play-off position, ahead of only Kilmarnock.
Robinson stated post-match that he does not know what the implications will be and that he will remain in charge and keep fighting until told otherwise. He admitted that both the performance and the result were unacceptable, describing the match as the story of their season where missed chances lead to defeat while opponents capitalize on their opportunities. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton suggested the 51-year-old should step down voluntarily, adding that the job appears too big for him and that he is likely to be sacked.
Recruitment Issues and Squad Struggles
Ahead of the fixture, the Aberdeen head coach insisted his players understood the magnitude of the situation, but the team produced an insipid display that featured a complete second-half capitulation. Miller called the display utterly embarrassing and noted that the reaction was far worse than the recent home defeat to Falkirk. Appointed in March, Robinson has won only six of 21 league games and suffered 11 defeats. Although he steered the club clear of relegation trouble last season, the threat of the drop has returned rapidly.
Miller highlighted that the manager made sweeping changes by signing 15 players in the summer, but very few have made a positive impact. He added that the recruitment has been poor and the players are not up to standard for this level or capable of handling high expectations. Should Aberdeen dispense with Robinson, it would mark their sixth managerial change since Derek McInnes left the club in 2021.
Pundit Reactions and Fan Discontent
Aberdeen have now lost four consecutive matches across all competitions and secured only two home victories in seven league games this term. Former Scotland midfielder Michael Stewart noted on Premier Sports that the result feels like the point of no return for Robinson. Former defenders Alan Hutton and Charlie Mulgrew agreed, with Hutton observing that the players appeared to give up toward the end after Hibs scored twice in the final six minutes. Mulgrew added that Robinson does not seem like the right fit for the club, noting that his style fails to match what supporters want to see on the pitch.
Discontent also ran high among supporters, with fan Colin telling BBC Sport that the team looks like a relegation waiting to happen and lacks pace, creativity, and a goal threat. Another fan, Bill, described Robinson as a panic purchase who is out of his depth, while Greig argued that the problems run deeper and questioned the club’s overall direction from the top down following a succession of managerial changes.
