The long-standing saga between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk took a dramatic turn when Aiyuk arrived at the team’s practice facility accompanied by his newly hired agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The pair held a meeting with the Niners’ front office at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Friday, Nov. 6.
The Meeting and Reinstatement Bid
Aiyuk brought Rosenhaus on board in an effort to secure reinstatement to the NFL for a potential professional comeback. Both addressed reporters prior to heading into their discussions with the team management.
“Obviously Brandon is here to meet with the team. Fortunately, he’s feeling good physically. He’s healthy. He’s ready to get back to work,” Rosenhaus told reporters as reported by sports.yahoo.com. “Don’t really have any comment about where he’s going to play. We’ll keep that between us and the Niners, but obviously we’re here with all the right intentions.”
Aiyuk has been sidelined since Week 7 of the 2024 season, when he suffered an MCL and ACL injury that necessitated surgery. He subsequently missed rehab sessions and the entire 2025 season. Now, a year later, the player states he is fully healthy and ready to resume his football career.
“I’m feeling great, feeling healthy in my recovery process, in my rehab process,” Aiyuk stated to sports.yahoo.com. “(I’m) back to 100% and looking to get reinstated into the National Football League.”
When questioned about whether he hopes to play for the Niners again, Aiyuk responded that his primary objective is simply to gain reinstatement into the league.
Uncertain Future With San Francisco
Following the scheduled meeting, very little information emerged. Rosenhaus offered an even briefer comment after the discussions concluded, telling sports.yahoo.com, “To be continued. We don’t have any further statements right now. But when we do we’ll let you know.” When asked who participated in the meeting, Aiyuk noted that they met with the top bosses.
The relationship between Aiyuk, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and his former teammates appears to have deteriorated significantly. After practice, Shanahan expressed little enthusiasm regarding the wide receiver, stating he plays no role in conversations surrounding Aiyuk and could care less about the outcome.
“No clue. Your guess is as good as mine,” Shanahan told sports.yahoo.com regarding Aiyuk’s future. He added that the situation has “been over for our football team for a long time, so I don’t hear much except questions about him today. But, it’s not too big of a deal for me to answer.”
Shanahan further emphasized that he views the situation as having zero connection to the current football squad, stating he gives zero thoughts to matters unrelated to the team during the season. Several players, including Fred Warner, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle, declined to comment in detail. Defensive lineman Nick Bosa remarked that it is not his place to comment, adding that he will greet Aiyuk with no hard feelings.
Before any potential return to San Francisco can occur, reports indicate Aiyuk may need to pay back nearly $13 million in bonus forfeiture.
Career Background
Selected 25th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Arizona State, Aiyuk has spent his entire professional career with San Francisco. Across 69 games with the Niners, he has recorded 294 receptions, 4,305 yards, and 25 touchdowns.
Born in Rocklin, California, the 28-year-old was raised in Reno, Nevada, where he attended Robert McQueen High School. He later returned to Rocklin to play football at Sierra College before transferring to Arizona State. Despite his history with the franchise, his time with the 49ers appears to have reached its conclusion.
The ongoing discussions regarding Aiyuk’s potential NFL reinstatement and future destination remain unresolved.
