Astros Hire Randy Flores as New General Manager

The Houston Astros announced on Friday that they have hired St. Louis Cardinals executive Randy Flores as the 15th general manager in franchise history. The 51-year-old steps into the role following an offseason of front office and coaching changes for the American League West champions.

Flores arrives in Houston after serving as the assistant general manager of amateur and pro acquisition for St. Louis. A former major league relief pitcher, Flores joined the Cardinals front office in 2015 as director of scouting before spending eight seasons as an assistant general manager with the franchise.

Front Office Transition and Offseason Changes

The general manager position in Houston had been vacant since Aug. 24, when the team parted ways with Dana Brown prior to the expiration of his contract at the end of the season. In the interim, front office duties were handled by three assistant general managers and Hall of Famer and special adviser Jeff Bagwell while owner Jim Crane conducted the search for a full-time replacement.

The hiring comes as the Astros also look to fill their managerial opening. The team opted not to renew the contract of manager Joe Espada after Houston was swept by the Chicago White Sox in the wild-card round. Despite the postseason exit, Houston finished the regular season 81-81 to capture the AL West title for the fifth time in six years, becoming the first MLB team in a full season to qualify for the playoffs without a winning record.

Executive Experience and Player Background

Astros owner Jim Crane commended Flores’ extensive background in player personnel and talent evaluation.

“Randy has had a huge impact on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons,” Crane said in a statement. “Throughout the entire interview process we’ve been thoroughly impressed with Randy and his background in scouting and player acquisition. We’re happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros and we can’t wait to get to work on bringing another championship to Houston.”

Flores expressed appreciation for his time in St. Louis while looking ahead to his new role in Texas.

“I am excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity,” Flores said. “The Astros have a long winning tradition under Jim Crane and I look forward to contributing to the success. I want to thank the Cardinals organization for the opportunities and support that made this next chapter possible. My family and I are excited to make Houston home.”

Before moving into executive management, Flores pitched in the majors for eight seasons from 2002 to 2010. The left-hander compiled an 11-5 record with a 4.61 ERA and four saves across 347 relief appearances and three starts while playing for the Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Minnesota Twins.

The Astros will formally introduce Flores during a news conference on Monday morning at Daikin Park.
