Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has emerged as the main focus of the coaching search at NC State, according to a report by On3.com.
Coaching Timeline and Connections
There is currently no official timetable for the hiring decision because Rivers remains busy coaching high-school football in Alabama. Rivers has worked as a high-school football coach since 2021 and previously interviewed for the head-coaching vacancy with the Buffalo Bills earlier this year.
Rivers has deep personal ties to the university, having played quarterback for the Wolfpack from 2000 to 2003. Additionally, his son Gunner has committed to join NC State as a member of the recruiting class of 2027.
Background and Career
The coaching vacancy at NC State opened up after the university fired Dave Doeren.
Following his standout collegiate career, Rivers was selected as the fourth pick in the 2004 NFL draft by the Giants before being immediately traded to the Chargers in the deal involving Eli Manning. He played for the Chargers from 2004 through 2019 and spent the 2020 season with the Colts before initially retiring. He later returned to the field last year to start three games for Indianapolis after starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
