Undefeated WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli faces the biggest opportunity of his professional career on Saturday as he prepares to defend his title against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Although Mbilli boasts an unblemished record, oddsmakers have installed Alvarez as the favorite in the upcoming showdown.

Path to the Championship

Mbilli secured the full championship following Terence Crawford’s victory over Alvarez in September 2025 and Crawford’s subsequent retirement. Prior to his elevation, Mbilli captured the interim belt in June 2025 by knocking out Maciej Sulecki in the first round, followed by a hard-fought split draw against Lester Martinez.

Strengths and Fighting Style

Known as a high-pressure bruiser, Mbilli utilizes his strength and muscular build to bully opponents inside the ring. He has secured 24 knockouts across his 29 career victories, demonstrating significant finishing power to complement his constant pressure.

Mbilli excels at trapping opponents against the ropes, where he delivers powerful right hands to the head alongside punishing left body shots designed to break down opponents. For example, he finished Mark Heffron with a body shot in just 40 seconds. Additionally, Mbilli embraces a rugged, uncomfortable fighting style that leaves opponents with few moments to rest.

Weaknesses and Vulnerabilities

Mbilli’s aggressive style presents notable drawbacks, which were evident during his draw against Martinez. He averages 78 punches per round—with 58 of those being power shots—doubling the typical output for the super middleweight division. This extreme pace places significant stress on his heavily muscled frame, occasionally leading to fatigue in longer bouts.

Furthermore, his pursuit of heavy blows creates defensive openings for counterpunches, which expand as he tires. Sergiy Derevyanchenko successfully exploited these openings with major counters during the middle and late rounds, even while competing effectively with one arm after an early injury.

Strategy Against Alvarez

Entering the bout as a +250 underdog, Mbilli faces an aging Alvarez who has gone eight consecutive fights without a stoppage. While Alvarez retains the power to hurt opponents who leave openings, Mbilli holds a size advantage and excels at imposing his will as the aggressor.

As Terence Crawford told DAZN, “Styles make fights, and Mbilli’s style is tailor-made for Canelo. Mbilli can’t do nothing but press Canelo. I don’t see him beating Canelo in a boxing match. I think his best success will be letting his hands go, roughing Canelo up, and making it a dogfight.”

Because Alvarez does not maintain a high offensive output, Mbilli has a viable path to victory by forcing an uncomfortable, high-tempo brawl and outworking his technically superior opponent.
