Quinton Byfield scored in overtime to secure a 6-5 victory for the Los Angeles Kings against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night, halting a dramatic late comeback by Ottawa. The Senators scored four consecutive third-period goals to wipe out a 5-1 deficit before falling in extra time.
Sens Launch Rapid Third-Period Rally
Ottawa spent a long stretch of the game struggling offensively, going 25 consecutive minutes without generating a shot on goal. Trailing 5-1 with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation, the Senators mounted an unexpected rally to force overtime.
Dylan Cozens started the comeback at 7:18 of the third period with his second goal of the season. Just 33 seconds later, Drake Batherson scored off the crossbar to cut the deficit to two. Cozens struck again on a power play at 12:34 to bring Ottawa within one, and Shane Pinto tied the game at 5-5 with 1:40 left in regulation by redirecting a pass from Batherson.
Cozens finished the evening with two goals and an assist, while Batherson contributed one goal and two assists during the comeback effort.
Kings Build Early Lead Behind Dominant Second Period
Ottawa initially opened the scoring when defenceman Tyler Kleven joined the attack and converted a rebound following a shot from Fabian Zetterlund. Los Angeles quickly took control afterward, scoring five unanswered goals.
Erik Haula leveled the score on a power play following an interference call on Artem Zub, with Corey Perry screening Ottawa goaltender Jonas Johansson. Trevor Moore gave the Kings the lead before Mikey Anderson made it 3-1 on a long-range shot that was again screened by Perry. Joel Armia then extended the lead to 4-1 with a spinning shot, prompting Ottawa to replace Johansson with backup Sam Ersson.
Artemi Panarin added a fifth goal for Los Angeles by shooting off the post and into the net, with Perry providing a screen once more. During the game, Ottawa was reduced to nine available forwards after Hayden Hodgson was ejected for a hit on Brandt Clarke, Andre Burakovsky suffered a lower-body injury, and Nick Cousins received a misconduct penalty.
Kings Extend Unbeaten Run Against Ottawa
Byfield ended the game in overtime, keeping the Kings’ unbeaten streak against the Senators alive. Los Angeles has now gone 13 consecutive games without a regulation loss against Ottawa, compiling a 10-0-3 record in that span.
The overtime defeat marked Ottawa’s first consecutive losses of the season, though head coach Travis Green’s squad managed to earn a point in the standings despite their middle-period struggles.
