Alex Tuch netted a pair of goals to guide the Washington Capitals to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. The win capped off a successful five-game homestand for Washington, which recorded four wins during the stretch.
Capitals Surge Past Flyers
Tuch scored his eighth and ninth goals of his inaugural campaign with Washington, sealing the victory with an empty-netter. Having arrived via a trade from Buffalo before signing an eight-year, $84 million contract extension in June, Tuch became just the second player in franchise history to score at least nine goals in his opening 11 appearances. Dino Ciccarelli previously accomplished the feat by scoring 12 times in his first 11 games late in the 1988-89 season.
Jordan Kyrou also scored twice for Washington, while Aliaksei Protas registered his first goal of the season. Dylan Strome contributed three assists, while Jack St. Ivany and Pierre-Luc Dubois added two assists apiece. Goaltender Logan Thompson made 23 saves in his return to the lineup after missing Saturday’s win over Buffalo due to a lower-body injury.
For Philadelphia, Sean Couturier leveled the score early in the second period, and Matvei Michkov added his ninth goal of the season on a power play. Goalie Joseph Woll made 25 stops for the Flyers, who dropped their third consecutive game following an overtime loss to Columbus a night earlier.
McDavid Sets Assists Record in Oilers Shutout
Connor McDavid recorded two points to extend his season-opening points streak to 13 games as the Edmonton Oilers blanked the Calgary Flames 4-0. McDavid, who leads the NHL with 36 points, set a league record by recording an assist in his 13th straight game to start the campaign, surpassing Wayne Gretzky, Ken Linseman, and Sebastian Aho.
Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen, and Alex Formenton provided the offense for Edmonton, while Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots he faced. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contributed assists as Edmonton improved to 9-2-2. Calgary starting goalie Devin Cooley left late in the first period with an injury after being collided with in the crease by Colton Dach. Dustin Wolf replaced him and made 20 saves as Calgary dropped to 5-7-0, ending a four-game winning streak.
Avalanche Third-Period Rally Beats Devils
The Colorado Avalanche ended New Jersey’s four-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory in Denver. Nazem Kadri and Parker Kelly scored goals just 62 seconds apart early in the third period to give Colorado the lead. Nathan MacKinnon added his eighth goal of the season with eight minutes remaining, and Jaden Schwartz scored 30 seconds later.
Colorado goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 20 saves as the Avalanche moved to 7-5-1. Connor Brown scored twice for New Jersey, including a short-handed effort in the opening period. Gabriel Landeskog answered with a power-play goal for Colorado in the second period, while Devils goaltender Jake Allen stopped 39 shots as New Jersey dropped to 8-5-0.
Kraken Edge Maple Leafs on Montour’s Late Winner
Brandon Montour scored the game-winning goal with 34 seconds remaining to push the Seattle Kraken past the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4. Montour’s slapshot from the top of the right circle spoiled a career night for Toronto top overall pick Gavin McKenna, who posted his first two-goal and three-point game in the NHL.
McKenna scored power-play goals in each of the first two periods before assisting on Auston Matthews’ game-tying goal with 1:30 remaining while Toronto had pulled goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Chandler Stephenson recorded a goal and an assist for Seattle, which also received goals from Ryker Evans, Berkly Catton, and Josh Mahura. Philipp Grubauer made 18 saves to help Seattle improve to 8-4-1.
Jack Roslovic scored for Toronto in the third period to cut the deficit to 4-3 before Matthews tied it, while Bobrovsky finished with 12 saves as Toronto fell to 7-6-2.
