Daniel Ricciardo Opens Up on F1 Exit Pain and Pride

Former Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo has opened up about the emotional impact of his sudden departure from the sport in 2024. Appearing on the official F1 Beyond The Grid podcast, as reported by Formula1.com, he revealed that he initially experienced deep feelings of failure and humiliation before ultimately finding a sense of pride in his career.

Reflecting on Exit and Pain

Ricciardo competed in Formula 1 from 2011 until 2024, securing eight Grand Prix victories and 24 podium finishes during his time with teams including Red Bull, McLaren, and Racing Bulls. His exit came immediately after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix following a challenging season with Racing Bulls, which led to him being replaced by Liam Lawson.

Describing his mindset after leaving the grid, Ricciardo explained that drivers develop an internal ruthlessness and high expectations from a young age. He noted that failing to perform at his required level and being unable to finish the season created a heavy sense of humiliation and pain that he initially tried to hide behind a public smile.

Finding Perspective and Gratitude

Despite the difficult ending, Ricciardo admitted he now appreciates Racing Bulls’ decision because it allowed him to discover a life outside of motorsport. He questioned whether he would have ever chosen to walk away himself, noting that he had previously considered quitting after races in Monaco in 2022 and Silverstone in 2015, but often let external voices convince him to continue.

Ricciardo stated that while he still dislikes how his career concluded, he feels grateful that the team made the decision for him so he is not forced to keep competing now. Although he remains uncertain about pursuing a racing career in another series, time and distance have allowed him to look back on his accomplishments with a smile.
