Kai Rooney netted four goals in 45 minutes as Manchester United cruised to a 6-0 victory against Burnley in the Under-18 Premier League on Tuesday.
Brilliant Performance at Burnley
Playing as a right-winger, the son of club record scorer Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the 22nd minute at the Clarets’ training base after Jaume Camacho headed against the woodwork. Emulating his father’s iconic celebration, the younger Rooney slid on his knees towards the corner flag. Manchester United shared footage of the opening goal on social media as the team dominated the fixture.
Rooney added a second-half penalty to his tally, headed in to complete his hat-trick, and then scored a fourth goal to bring his season total to five goals in three appearances. Jaume Camacho and Noah Ajayi also scored late in the match to round off the 6-0 victory for the youth side.
Background and Family Connection
Kai Rooney turns 17 on Monday and has been with Manchester United since the age of 11. His father joined the club from Everton in 2004 for an initial £20 million and scored 253 goals before departing in 2017. In June, Kai signed scholarship terms alongside seven other youngsters, including Jacey, the son of head coach Michael Carrick. Last season, the young forward made six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League and debuted in the FA Youth Cup. Darren Fletcher serves as the Under-18 coach. Wayne Rooney stated that he is “really proud” of his son’s scholarship achievement and remains mindful of managing his circle of friends. Meanwhile, his younger brothers are also developing their football careers, with 13-year-old Klay in the United academy and Kit and Cass pursuing the sport.
Manchester United can offer Rooney a professional contract when he celebrates his birthday next week.
