Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described Kimi Antonelli’s dominant victory at the United States Grand Prix as the young Italian’s finest performance of the 2026 season so far. Although Antonelli did not completely secure the World Championship mathematically in Austin, as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell remain in contention, he claimed pole position and delivered an exceptional race.
Overcoming Early Struggles
According to Formula1.com, the weekend did not start smoothly for the team as they struggled during Friday practice while attempting to optimise an update package first introduced in Malaysia. However, by Saturday’s qualifying session, Antonelli and his engineering team successfully found the optimal window with the W17 car.
Wolff stated on Sunday evening that Antonelli’s start on an inferior tyre and his subsequent control throughout the race exemplified the driving of a champion. The Mercedes boss suggested that Antonelli outperformed the car itself, noting that his driving style appeared to naturally gel with the machinery.
Reflecting on Development and Mindset
When asked if the Austin victory surpassed Antonelli’s remarkable charge from the back to win in Monza, Wolff initially joked about his memory before acknowledging both achievements, highlighting the presence of Mercedes caps among the crowd. Wolff also credited the fresh 2026 regulations for helping the driver, noting that Antonelli’s relaxed mindset has been a major asset.
Wolff recalled a moment before the race when Antonelli visited his office completely unburdened, sitting down to express his intention to simply enjoy the event without thinking about the championship pressure. The team principal admitted he remains astonished by the massive leap Antonelli has made since last season, praising the driver’s unprecedented ability to process information and deliver outstanding results.
Looking Ahead to the Title Decider
While the championship is nearly decided, Wolff emphasized that the success is the result of nine years of teamwork, development, and an investment exceeding ten million euros by the Mercedes junior program led by Gwen Lagrue. He reflected on past criticisms Antonelli faced during difficult moments, such as failing to score points in nine races last year and shedding tears in Spa.
Antonelli still needs to officially secure the title at the upcoming race in Mexico. Wolff concluded by joking that the team’s post-race celebration will either involve a large tequila party or a caipirinha celebration the following weekend.
